When Dan and Ruth Detweiler, members of the Old Order Amish faith, left Ohio in 1997 for a new life in Cub Run, Kentucky, it was with a slower pace of life in mind. Instead they soon found themselves the owners of a hardware and variety store then known as Farmwald’s. They changed the name to Detweiler’s and quickly set about increasing the store’s inventory. Their business now consists of three buildings, plus an expanded outdoor space. From shelves of old-fashioned candies, jams & jellies and bulk food supplies to homemade baskets and other crafts, the two-story country store has a large selection of household products, entertainment & gift items, primitives and other furnishings. Its large collection of jigsaw puzzles is particularly popular with both their Amish and English customers. Some visitors stop by just for a delicious homemade sandwich made to order; the deli contains a large selection of meats and cheeses. Recently, homemade fudge and hand dipped ice cream were added. Both come in a variety of flavors. Milk, eggs, bread, frozen foods and a variety of other grocery items are also available.
Just a few feet away sits the former hardware store. It is now filled with rows and rows of fabric in a variety of patterns, colors and textures. Other sewing supplies can be found there, as well as the beautiful singing clocks that often sell so quickly the owners don’t get the chance to enjoy their wonderful sounds. Hand crafted rocking chairs and many other items can be found in the spacious building. Out back, visitors will find a variety of landscaping supplies, from railroad ties to stepping stones and river pebbles, to mulch. They also carry a large selection of outdoor furniture. In June 2014, the Detweilers opened their Crazy Bear Trading Post. The interior has the look and feel of an old hunting lodge. Only open on Saturdays at this time, the couple plans to expand to additional days in the future as they increase their inventory of hunting, trapping, fishing and camping supplies. For the latter particularly, they plan to feature authentic “old fashioned” gear such as the full size teepee that sits in the middle of the building. A large selection of items are available now, as well as unique products such as the wooden carved bears.
